Why batteries are treated as special cargo

Lithium cells can, if damaged or defective, overheat in ways that are dangerous in a cargo hold. Transport regulations therefore control how they are packed, marked, documented, and which transport modes accept which battery types and quantities. The rules differ between batteries packed with equipment, contained in equipment, and shipped alone — and standalone lithium batteries face the tightest restrictions, especially by air.

  • Declare battery contents at quotation — type, whether installed in a product, and capacity if known
  • Expect fewer carrier options and specific routings; sea freight often suits battery goods that air restricts
  • Compliant packaging and marking are arranged before pickup, not improvised at the airport
  • Documentation may include test and safety information from the manufacturer — ask your supplier early

The one unforgivable mistake

Undeclared batteries. Screening exists precisely to find them, and the consequences run from offloaded cargo and missed departures to penalties and blacklisting of shipments. An undeclared power bank buried in "phone accessories" can hold an entire consolidated shipment hostage — including other customers' goods. Whatever a supplier suggests, never ship batteries quietly.
